A Mystery ( CRR )

In class we have been reading "The Heart Of Darkness" , we have been interperting, concluding, making ideas, assumptions, inferences to what is the them or who the book is about, yet we still do not know. Me & my group came up with the idea of the them to be "Mystery" , we chose this because as you are reading the book you hear many opinions and expressions about who Mr.Kurtz is but do not really know who he is , we also inferred that Marlow is racist yet we think he has a little bit of morality in him. We also thought that the brick maker was a good person ; however from reading the book more , I believe the brick maker is really the evil guy and not Mr. Kurtz. Another theme which came that connects to the brick maker being evil or not was the "Good or evil" theme which Taina's group came up with , which interested me a lot because it helped me connect to who really has morality in their beliefs. Hyra's group believe that theme was colonization which I can agree with because the book describes slaves and how they were enslaved , it describes the ways they were mistreated and blame for certain situations that occurred like the fire in the house that Marlow witnessed but didn't take in action for. This book is hard to understand but I believe that the Heart of Darkness is full of surprises which makes us keep changing our minds about a certain persons character in the book , which is why I believe the theme is a Mystery.

Debate (FC)

There are many advantages in attending and HBCU. First in for most there is no minority community , which usually welcomes a person and make them feel more welcomed. Scholars have majority of the leadership so they are more noticed and have more opportunities. Graduation rates are higher compared to a PWC, after graduating in HBCU they are more looked at with much pride , respect, and prestige. There are many people who graduated from HBCU's that are currently successful in life today such as Oprah Winfrey who attended Tennessee State University with a full scholarship and Spike Lee who attended Morhouse College. Both are successful philanthropist and are billionaires today that are a huge role model to all students internationally. Experiencing life at HBCU will give you a place to make a second home and through wonderful clubs like sororities and fertinities you are able to embrace these ideas and are more definite with a career because you are sponsored by many after graduating.

Leadership ( ID)

There have been man few selected to be in this class called the Leadership Class. Its only the people who are on track for getting the advance regents diploma but are also in The Science Research Class. Mr. Davenport , our principal teaches the top 15 students in the Leadership class. Ar first , I didn't understand what the class was about , but now we are able to look at past and present figures of leadership internationally and see how it reflects on decisions made around the world. In the leadership class , we are able to read articles and speeches from powerful people from the past like Malcolm X , Dubious, and Booker T. Washington. We are able to compare these men thoughts and ideas and see how it contribute and relate to society success today. Through our leadership class we are being prepared to be strong and keep a positive attitude when we are attacked with racism or discrimination.Leadership class turned out to be the most interesting class to me after Pre-calculus , I am able to connect to these powerful men we are talking about because just like them I can influence others and make a change that will last for over a time period. Their open minded , brave and intelligent characteristics as a person are what made them leaders and are what creates a better society today.Through Great leadership we are able to see the positive outcomes of society and creates a more peaceful and better place.Leadership class is a class that allows me to appreciate who I am and influences me to do better , because I too can become a leader.

Senior Dedication ( Free Choice )

We are here, finally, just to think the other day; we were all in the summer program to be enrolled into Thurgood Marshall Academy as 7th graders. “Welcome our future graduates of Thurgood Marshall Academy, Class of 2014”. 2014 just sounded so far because it was only 2009.. I have met a lot of people that are a big inspiration for me today. Many teachers doubted me because of my attitude but they helped me get over my attitude and work with my brain and proving others wrong about their assimilations. This is very important to me because when going to college you have to overlook the prejudice idea that others think. Thurgood Marshall Academy will always be a place I will reflect on because this is also like a second home for me my classmates are like my brothers and sisters, and I will always remember what I have been through these doors of Thurgood.

My thoughts ( free choice )

Every single day I wake up on a mission , a mission to do better , feel better , and improve on certain things such as my behavior , attitude and the way I approach certain ideas or opinions. The way I have started to do this was by not replying back to everything or just ignoring. I have been in many conflicts and most if the time the only reason I'm in them because I'm always saving someone where I end up getting hurt or end up really "loosing" what I was fighting to win for. Now I am more certain about the situations I tend to fall into and I take process of choosing the right decision. I believe if I put myself first and think of the consequences then I will feel more proud and more determined about my goal , eventually not making me regret the decision I made. These are the thoughts that run through my head every morning and these are the thoughts I reflect on when I'm making a decision.

A Slave Grateful For Slavery ( CRR )

In class , we have been on this topic about Phillis Wheatley for a while now and I think I finally came up with an answer to why she loved that she was in slavery. As a slave you are forced to believe many things as Phillis Wheatley was forced to believe that Christianity is a way to freedom but it can also be that she really have faith in what she believes in and want to inform and offer these ideas to her people to show that they are not alone. A slave is the most lonely person you could imagine because everything that may seem grateful to them gets taken away like family , pride, their name and their culture. I believe Phillis Wheatley closest thing to not being lonely and to not being broken apart was Christianity. Phillis Whaetley made a connection between living life and how to pick choices and new ideas while living life even though she was a slave , she created solutions that she thinks would solve her problems. She created different options for herself and through her poetry she explained the way she felt about those options. Poetry was a way she expressed herself and it helped her express herself even more. In her theory I believe that she is only grateful about being a slave because that enabled her to come to America and find her faith because even in Africa slaves had slaves.

Better Than What I Thought It Would Me ! ( ID)

Receiving my schedule for the first time , I was excited until I see that I have been placed in the Pre-Calculus Class.Last year I was placed in Honors Math Class , which was a struggling class for me , so imagine how it is in Pre-Calculus Class. Before I was placed in and out of Pre- Calculus and Statistics I guess its because of my behavior issues that affects my learning but nope it was the debatable question of my dedication. I officially started Pre-calculus class on a Thursday where I went to go get a new schedule. The class is not as bad as it sounds. We learn about factoring and we reviewed many topics that deals with Algebra. I love Algebra its so fun and its something that keeps me company and I will never get tired of it. During class I learned how to write the slope intercept of a line , how to find and write in slope intercept form , writing the equation of the line. Through the do now's , homework assignments, and classwork I am able to concentrate more and feel dedicated. I started to work with my peers and sometimes in Pre-Calculus we are to go up and write on the smart board. We communicate in various ways , and think of multiple ways to answer a question. We never give up on a question , we always solve and when we solve incorrectly you go back and try again until you learn your mistake and you came up with the answer.

Guineaaa Conakry (PB)

If you haven't notice I am the first in my entire family to be born in the United States Of America ; however my love for my family descent is extremely huge. The place where most of my family are and most of my family were born and raised was back home in Guinea , Conakry located on the equator at the tip of West Africa. My first time ever visiting Africa was in the summer of 2010. Guinea is a natural place where everything is fresh and good , fresh fruits grown from trees , beautiful climate , friendly people , big houses , but more importantly freedom. Living in Africa for two months was so exciting and fun we went to movies , beach , rock climbing, clubs , parties , baby showers , weddings everything was just full of joy and happiness because it was filled with people that welcomed you . I really love my homeland Guinea which makes me so anxious to hurry and graduate so I can go back and show my diploma to my family. Guinea is a place to relax and have freedom because it is so nice to just not worry about anything . In guinea , the main focus is money , if you have money than you can live in Guinea until whenever and still live great . My precious homeland where I will soon return .

A Lost & Remembered One ( Free Choice )

It was very rainy that day , the house was dirty in my grandma house so I decided to get up and clean. I began to sweep and after I was about to mop the house but as soon as I reach for the mop my grandma calls me over. Mama : " Fatou , come here " Me : " Okay mama , I'm coming " Mama : " Hurry up now " Me : " Yes , Mama " Mama : " Why you do not want to go back to America " Me : " Because I want to stay , I have fun here , here is where I want to be , America is too stressful" Mama : " You have to understand that the reason why we are living healthy and strong is because of you and the rest of the family back in America" Me : " But , Mama I wanna stay here with the family I have not been with for the last 13 years of my life " Mama : " This family would not have been here if it wasn't for your parents providing for us and giving back to us, so you have to go back and promise to do your best in your school and make me and the rest of our family proud by bringing success to Africa" Me : " Okay , Mama I promise " Every time I think of my vacation back home I think of what my grandma told me when I went to go visit her in the summer of 2010. When I was going to my trip to Guinea , Conakry I did not want to go at all but when I got there everything just changed and I wanted to stay and never come back. However; because of my grandma's words I use that as a guide and as a reminder of who and what I am striving for success. A month after I came back from Africa in the Summer of 2010 My grandma passed away and she was healthy , strong , and was not sick at all , she passed away in her sleep. Education is the way I push forward so I can make my grandma proud or even feel like I did not fail her.I will keep my promise and try my hardest to not fail my grandmas dream. Rest in peace Grandma , I love you .

Oh Music ! ( PB)

Something I am very passionate about is music. Music is something that is very broad and makes up most of the things I do in my life. I can’t go a day without music which makes me struggle sometimes in the holy month of Ramadan, where we have to fast without listening to music. Music is like my best friend because it is with me in every mood and gives me advice. When I’m feeling down I listen to songs like “Holy Grail” “Thousand Years”, love songs because it connects with me, then to cheer me up I listen to old school songs by great artist like Tupac, Dr.Dre, Biggie. I also listen to hype, dancing songs which gets me excited and keeps me in a happy mood. Music is very special to me and never leaves my side because it is one way I am able to have peace with myself and learn how to solve my problems and control my emotions. Through music I am able to concentrate on a certain thing I am doing, For example when I am typing an essay or doing an assignment while listening to music I am able to think and write more because I am able to connect more. Music helps me become more outgoing and makes me feel happy. I love music , it’s something that I believe is different in every one perspective , it is non-judgmental , and it helps also bring change and helps create a bigger and more better place with in my mind.
